Can HardiPlank lap siding be installed over my existing siding, without removing the old?

Nope, and for good reason. We get this question often, and usually when a customer is considering vinyl siding as one option.
HardiPlank is a replacement siding product, replacement being the operative word here. Before HardiPlank is installed, the old siding is removed, the entire home is inspected for any signs of mold, rot, or structural problems that might have been hidden by the old siding, and only then new HardiPlank siding is installed.
When we remove existing siding and perform a thorough inspection, it is not uncommon to find minor problems in need of repair. We perform a walk-around inspection with the home owner and let you choose if you want to make these repairs or not. At this stage the repairs are typically very fast and affordable.
Consider then what might have occurred when small areas of rot, mold, or mildew were just covered up? Long term growing problems is one possible answer.
But please consider - The steps we wrote above are the proper steps required to install the siding in accordance with James Hardie Siding Products specifications. Anyone with a truck can buy HardiPlank and make you an offer to install it. It's up to you, the home owner, to do your homework and make certain the contractor you hire has experience and a history of doing these jobs right.
